Open-Flued Boilers

Many old boilers are open-flued and floor mounted, for no other reason that they weigh a ton and few walls will support them. In order to burn the fuel such a boiler is taking some or all of the air they need from the room in which they are situated. Once burnt, the fumes drift naturally up and away via a flue open to the room in which it is situated. From the description you can only say that these boilers can be very dangerous if anything goes wrong. A Neasden Plumber is experienced in open-flued boilers.

Over the years they have chosen designs to make them less dangerous. They fitted fans to the flue to force the fumes out of the house and they fitted all sorts of detectors to the burner so that the boiler closes down as soon as there is any danger of poisonous gases being released. Of course, these are all lifesavers if they work, so it's important to keep an eye on the boiler.

Ventilation:
Because these types of boilers take some or all of their air from their room, you usually need additional ventilation. Neasden Plumbers can fit extra ventilation if required. Sadly this is also a cause of draughts, and is not unknown for people to decide they would rather be warm and dead than alive and bothered by a slight draught, so the vents end up being covered. As well as being covered purposely which is a stupid thing to do, they can also be blocked accidentally for instance by someone moving the chair against the vent etc. The result of poor ventilation is poor combustion and also the release of carbon monoxide, a tasteless, odourless, invisible gas that is lethal to anyone breathing it.
