Plumbing Terminology

Soft water.

Water that has little or no calcium (in suspension) And can be made acidic as it could contain carbon dioxide.

Thermostat.

A temperature controlled device that will energise or open circuit whatever appliance is connected to it as its temperature rises or falls.

P trap.

A P-shaped air trap that is fitted in sanitary pipework to keep sewer gases from passing back through into the room. It has a 90 degree outlet horizontal to the floor.

Pump.

Used to move liquids such as water in large or small volumes. An example of this is the pump in a CH system which will move hot water around the radiators and associated pipework.

Sealed system.

A CH system that is not open to the atmosphere and requires filling from a temporary screw on hose (filling loop) from the cold water mains.

Machine Bend.

This is where you bend a pipe rather than use a fitting. Neasden Plumbers use pipe benders. A machine called a tube bender makes the bend, and this results in a much gentler bend that will not restrict water flow with less chance of leaking.

Solder.

Use of an alloy used to make joints in copper tubing. A Neasden Plumber can solder. The solder used to contain lead and tin. Today it is usually lead free, consisting of copper and tin.

Storage cistern.

Big tank that is usually located in the loft or roof space, designed to hold water to feed a system of both hot and cold water.

Radiant heating.

A form of heating, that will only warm whatever the waves land upon. (Usually an office or its occupants). It will not warm the air around them.

Overflow pipe.

Found in toilets and many other tanks, to drain away any excess water that rises above a pre-set level As a safety feature it operates when a filling valve fails to shut off.
